All alpine climbing ropes feature both physical (ITT) and chemical (UDP) protection across the entire rope.
All GILMONTE ropes have a thermally treated sheath (ITT – Infra Thermo Treatment, known in other brands as “Protect,” “Thermo Shield,” “Endurance,” etc.). This treatment stabilizes the rope, improves handling, and bonds the core to the sheath. At the same time, it increases sheath durability and helps prevent dirt and water from penetrating the rope, contributing to a longer service life.
UDP – Ultra Deep Protect means that not only the sheath, but also every fiber forming the rope core is chemically impregnated. In other words, the rope meets the UIAA Water Repellent (Full Dry) standard (not just Dry or Dry Cover). The chemical treatment is free from PFC-based substances, which are environmentally harmful.
A key advantage of ropes with UDP protection is that they do not absorb water (UIAA requirement: < 5.0% of rope weight; Gilmonte ropes: < 1.4%) and therefore will not freeze in winter conditions.
